Honda Canada has reached a significant milestone in its history by manufacturing its ten millionth vehicle in Canada.
Honda is one of the most appreciated automobile manufacturers in Canada, and several of its vehicles are among the best-selling in their respective categories every year. What you may not know is that many of the models sold here are also produced here.
The Civic and CR-V are produced in Alliston, Ontario. In fact, a Touring Hybrid version of the Japanese manufacturer's SUV was chosen to represent the ten million units of the brand in Canada.
A long-standing history
The first Honda vehicle manufactured in Canada rolled off the production line in 1986. It was an Accord. Since then, the brand has built numerous models on Canadian soil, including the Odyssey, Pilot, and Ridgeline. Some models from the Acura range have also been manufactured in Canada, such as the EL, CSX, and ZDX.
Except for last year, the Honda Civic has always been the most popular car in Canada. Its local production began in 1988 with the 3-door version. A sport coupe variant was added to the lineup in 1993. As for the Odyssey, it started its Canadian production in 1998, followed by the Pilot in 2002.
In 2006, Honda Canada Manufacturing (HCM) celebrated its 20 years of activity in Canada, as well as the production of its four millionth vehicle. Today, less than 20 years later, the brand's production has more than doubled. At the current rate, Honda should add one to two million additional units to its Canadian vehicle production before celebrating its fortieth anniversary.
It was in 2008 that Honda began manufacturing 4-cylinder engines directly in Canada. In 2012, HCM achieved a production of 6 million vehicles. In the following years, the brand continued to achieve success in Canada, including several titles of "Vehicle of the Year" according to the majority of the largest North American automotive magazines.
Some figures
Honda Canada Manufacturing produces approximately 400,000 vehicles in Canada each year. Out of this number, nearly 100,000 units are sold here in Canada. This is huge, especially when you consider that it only includes two models, the Civic and the CR-V. HCM also produces over 190,000 engines on an annual basis. In total, the Japanese manufacturer currently operates three Canadian factories, one for each model and one for its engines.
